A CREATION STORY:

Once Upon a Time Before Time, all that was, was Eris. She was everything possible and impossible; She was Chaos.

No Eris was an introspective Deity, pretty much because she had to be. After all, if you’re literally everything, what else can you observe, but yourself?

Anyway, She was doing some serious navel-gazing one formless day, and She noticed something: While most of her was swirling around at random, some parts of Her seemed to be moving in predictable patterns. So, just like how some men give a separate name to their testicles, She decided to call what was predictable “Order”, and what was unpredictable “Disorder”.

This was the most interesting thing She had seen in eons, so she grabbed a beer and some Beef Jerky and sat down to watch what happened.

She saw Order tended to crystallize, and the strongest bits of Order were actually able to convert the Disorder it encountered into more Order. This freaked out Eris at first, because She kind of liked doing her own thing and, let’s face it, was a little flighty at times. But soon She saw that even as the Order was converting Disorder, soon enough, Disorder was breaking up little pieces of Order, usually from Order collapsing under the stress of it’s own structure.

And then She watched Disorder for a while, and saw that if you stared long enough, you could see that some of the Disorder was predictable, and some of it even collapsed into Order.

“This is a fun game,” Eris said, cracking open another brew. “It’s like nether side can win out.”

Indeed, She saw that when Order really started gaining momentum, and converting every bit of Disorder it could reach, Disorder went totally batshit, and when it started gaining the upper hand, Order grew ever stronger.

When Eris saw how Order and Disorder kept a balance, she grew bored. “Who wants to watch something that never changes, no matter how much it changes?” She asked.

Then something caught Her eye.

There were little bits of Order zipping around, every which way. Sometimes, they’d bounce off Disorder and head off somewhere else, and sometimes, they’d take some Disorder and turn it into Order. At the same time, these bits of order didn’t seem to get too worked up when parts of themselves turned to Disorder. In short, the Order kept changing itself, in response to the Disorder it encountered.

After spending some time contemplating the question of how, for example thing(1) remains thing (1) when it keeps replacing itself with other stuff, Eris finally said Fuck It, and decided that she loved these little Order bits, as they were much more fun to watch than the unceasing cosmic battle of Stasis.

And that’s why Eris likes us.
